Lexy’s enthusiasm and will to carry out her investigation of Bellwood had swept Rob along until he had played his role of distressed husband with some pleasure. But once he had left her at the asylum, his own commitment to the project had begun to fade, to be replaced by guilt and apprehension. To make matters worse, Hawk Mackenna seemed to be taking an inordinate interest in him and in Lexy’s whereabouts. Rob kept reminding himself that what he or Lexy was doing was none of Mackenna’s business, but it was difficult to convince himself of that when pinned by the intensity of those dark, gold-flecked eyes.

“Do you know which farms Lexy was going to visit?” Hawk asked first, and despite his best efforts, Rob’s eyes slipped away from the other man’s. “Errrr… ah, no, not exactly. She’s the horse expert, not I.”

Rob knew he had answered badly, looking guilty as sin, and it was only the first day of Lexy’s stay at Bellwood. And it didn’t get any better. Wherever he turned, Hawk seemed to be there, watching him with eyes so piercing, his name seemed more fitting than ever. “Has Lexy sent any messages?” “Are you sure she’s looking at horses?” The questions seemed to follow Rob everywhere, and he couldn’t get his impressions of Bellwood out of his mind. Hawk was running out of patience with himself as well as with Rob. He kept repeating to himself that whatever Lexy was doing should be her own concern, but his heart and mind kept telling him otherwise. In the week before her absence from the city, she had avoided him, of that he was sure. He’d become accustomed to spending a good deal of time with her, both of them accepting the boundaries he had set. But he didn’t believe that the uneasy feelings he had came simply from missing her. His journalistic instincts were aroused. Lexy was hiding something, and Rob was helping her. That, Hawk admitted to himself, bothered him greatly. If she had a problem, or a special story she was working on, and needed help, why hadn’t she come to him instead?

On the third day, Hawk issued a supper invitation to Rob that was more in the way of a command. Rob would have refused except, by then, he was so worn down by fretting about Lexy, he no longer knew what he wanted to do about her secret. He talked to Landon Tilitson, getting more details about what Landon suspected in regard to his sister’s incarceration at Bellwood, and Landon had done nothing to quiet his fears, even suggesting that perhaps the two men ought to go out there and take both women out by force. The prospect of gaining
